Truth & Wisdom

Juneteenth Talk:
Freedom, Liberty, Democracy, & Citizenship in the age of  revolution

North Carolina History Center, Tryon Palace, New Bern, NC

For this Juneteenth talk, Dr. Johnson will reflect on the way Black people in North Carolina participated in the American Revolution as Patriots framing their actions within the ideas of freedom, liberty, democracy, and citizenship.  Dr. Johnson will connect this early Patriotism in the Black community with why Juneteenth has such currency in Black communities today and why knowing and understanding history matters.

Welcome

The G. C. and Frances Hawley Museum® is an online clearinghouse for Black people's often hidden history and culture in and from North Carolina. We also host reference materials on Black people in the United States and internationally.

We have provided a place, through this Museum, where you can find information from many sources such as web-based content; open education resources (OER); print, video, and digital media; academic journals and books; documentary films; original materials including oral interviews and more importantly, what our readers share with us.

Your feedback is important to us and helps us provide as much information as possible about Black people's rich history, heritage, and culture – especially in North Carolina.
